Frequently asked questions
What is quarterly compounding on FDs?
Interest may be compounded every quarter and paid at maturity or periodically, depending on the product. Read the deposit terms.
Are FDs risk-free?
They are not market-linked like equities, but carry issuer and inflation risks. DICGC insurance limits apply to eligible bank deposits.
Is TDS deducted on FD interest?
Yes. Under Section 194A, banks deduct TDS once your total interest with the bank crosses the threshold notified for the financial year (a higher limit applies to senior citizens). Submit Form 15G/15H if your total income is below the taxable limit.
What happens if I break my FD before maturity?
Most banks allow premature withdrawal but pay a lower rate for the period actually completed-commonly a penalty of around 0.5%-1% off the applicable rate. Tax-saver FDs with a 5-year lock-in cannot be broken early at all.
Is FD interest taxable even if I don't withdraw it?
Yes. FD interest is taxable on an accrual basis each year at your slab rate, whether it is paid out or reinvested in a cumulative deposit.
