Wear jewellery

10g of 22K you can put on. Resale is close to metal only — about ₹1,40,920.

Catch: ₹21,645 of making + GST does not come back when you sell.

Best when: A wedding, gift or something you will actually wear.

Sovereign Gold Bond

Same ₹1,62,565 buys ~11.5g of gold exposure, plus ~₹32,513 interest over 8 years (2.5% p.a.).

Catch: Lock-in and exit windows. Interest is taxable. Capital gains at maturity follow SGB rules.

Best when: An 8-year hold when RBI has a tranche open.

Gold ETF / gold fund

Same ₹1,62,565 buys ~11.5g of gold exposure (expense ratio chips a little each year).

Catch: No making charges, no ornament. Taxed as per current gold-fund rules.

Best when: Liquid gold you can SIP or sell on a trading day.

₹2,709/month for 5 years at an illustrative 12% is ~₹2,19,744 (you would have invested ₹1,62,565).

Catch: Market-linked. Not gold. Use this only if the jewellery is optional.

Best when: A goal that is not “I need to wear this”.

Frequently asked questions

How is the value of gold jewellery calculated?

Value is roughly weight × purity factor (22K is 22/24) × the prevailing gold rate, plus making charges and 3% GST on the total. This gold value calculator separates metal value from making charges so quotes are comparable.

What is the GST on gold purchase in India?

3% GST applies on the gold value, and making charges attract GST as well. Rates are set by the GST Council-confirm the latest before a large purchase.

Why is the resale value lower than what I paid?

Making charges and GST are not recovered on resale-you are paid for metal content alone, sometimes with a purity deduction. Treat jewellery as consumption, not a pure investment.

Should I buy jewellery or an SGB / gold ETF with the same money?

If you will wear the piece, jewellery wins. If you want gold exposure, the same invoice usually buys more grams via SGB or a gold ETF because making is not gold. The calculator on this page and the wear-vs-hold tool on gold rate pages show that split with today's rate.
