Value is roughly weight × purity factor (22K is 22/24) × the prevailing gold rate, plus making charges and 3% GST on the total. This gold value calculator separates metal value from making charges so quotes are comparable.
3% GST applies on the gold value, and making charges attract GST as well. Rates are set by the GST Council-confirm the latest before a large purchase.
Making charges and GST are not recovered on resale-you are paid for metal content alone, sometimes with a purity deduction. Treat jewellery as consumption, not a pure investment.
If you will wear the piece, jewellery wins. If you want gold exposure, the same invoice usually buys more grams via SGB or a gold ETF because making is not gold. The calculator on this page and the wear-vs-hold tool on gold rate pages show that split with today's rate.
